When starting with a chimera state having the maximum number Nσ of heads in a given domain, the crossing of the boarder towards the next domain with unit decreased maximum number leads to the vanishing of at least one head. Space–time plots show the capture of such bifurcation events, both in numerics and experiment, as N-headed chimera becomes unstable, being replaced by (N−1) heads.
