(a) Chemical structure of 1,8-nonodiyne alongside a schematic of the monolayer formed from 1,8-nonodiyne on H-terminated silicon via ultraviolet-assisted hydrosilylation reaction. The reaction was allowed to take place overnight under an inert atmosphere (b) (5 μm × 5 μm) AFM image, in tapping mode, at ambient conditions of an H-terminated n-type Si(−111) surface modified with 1,8-nonadiyne showing that the atomically flat Si(−111) terraces are preserved after the formation of the monolayer.
