Photographs of the ion (teal) and atom (purple) fluorescence during laser-cooling. Each measurement is split into initialization, immersion, and recooling. Ions are initialized either hot or cold. During immersion, the ions are immersed in the laser-cooled buffer gas for 5 s followed by a recooling period. Two control measurements are included during which the buffer gas is not present. The marker (*) indicates the frame at which recooling of the immersed ions has been achieved, which defines the recooling time for that trial.
