An introduction needs to be made between the rich cultural knowledge of social studies and the natural sciences.

The Editorial in the first issue of Nature Climate Change remarked that “climate change is now as much a societal problem as a physical one”1. Although climate is inarguably changing society, social practices are also impacting on the climate. Nature and culture are deeply entangled, and researchers must examine how each is shaping the other. But they are largely failing to do so.
