California votes for embryonic stem cell research

$3 billion over 10 years will be devoted to stem cell research.

However, post-election celebrating linger several sets of concerns. Some have to do with how well the proposed California Institute for Regenerative Medicine will regulate and fund human stem cell and related research activities. Because the source of the funds is not federal, research involving the creation of new ES cell lines would not be hampered by the restrictions imposed by President George W. Bush on August 9, 2001, limiting research to a set of cells lines established before that date (See Nat. Biotechnol. 19, 791, 2001)
