Monitoring the evolution of plant transgenic science is hampered by the difficulty of obtaining accurate bibliometric information compared with equivalent animal and microbial research. This is mostly due to the imprecision of the term 'transformation,' which is generally used to describe plant genetic manipulation. Here, following the development of a rigorous data collection, curation and analysis strategy of two major literature databases, I assess the scale, growth and impact of the literature associated with plant transgenic science over the past 30 years.
