J&J hopes to simplify and accelerate the collaborative process by creating what executives call a 'one-stop shop' for potential partners. Robert Urban, head of the Boston innovation center explains, “What [potential partners] want is rapid, professional decision making. That's our focus at the innovation centers.” A typical innovation center assembles two dozen or so J&J scientists, corporate investors and business development executives in a single hub. The idea is to foster and facilitate a range of collaborations with academics and entrepreneurs, including company creation and early-stage funding, research alliances and licensing deals.
