FDA backs clinician-free AI imaging diagnostic tools

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared a deep-learning, artificial intelligence (AI)-based software to detect and help diagnose wrist factures in adults. On May 24, Imagen received permission from FDA to market OsteoDetect, a software product that interprets bone X-rays for signs of distal radius fractures and marks the location of the fracture on the image. It is intended to improve detection and diagnosis of wrist fractures for primary care physicians and orthopedic specialists, and in emergency rooms and urgent care settings to supplement, but not replace, a clinician's review and judgment.
