Menelas Pangalos, executive vice president of Innovative Medicines at AstraZeneca, one of the architects of the new R&D strategy, says, “lots of alternatives and different options” were considered before Cambridge was selected as the site of the new facility. The hope is that mixing together small-molecule R&D with biologics research carried out at Cambridge–based MedImmune, in a purpose-built facility situated in one of Europe's leading clusters, will create a scientific environment in which AstraZeneca can revitalize its pipeline.
