Paris may have to alter its nickname if a French startup has its way. Glowee is producing bioluminescent solutions capable of emitting light for up to 40 hours by inserting light-producing proteins into bacteria. The company launched after its founders won the 2013 ArtScience Prize. The first iteration has the lighting intensity of a nightlight, but the company is raising cash from a crowdfunding campaign to develop brighter and longer-lasting lights with the goal of bringing bioluminescence to places where the grid is either too expensive or complicated to access.
