Roche spends $1 billion on Foundation Medicine's tumor profiling

Foundation Medicine offers clinical tumor profiling services directly to physicians and also provides its platform and knowledge base to biopharma firms (Nat Biotechnol. 30, 14, 2012). The commercial side of the business, helping physicians match patients with the best treatments, is the larger market opportunity—in the range of $3–4 billion. In 2014, the company's total revenue was $61 million, says COO Steve Kafka.

The deal will likely boost Foundation Medicine's commercial business to physicians as it will now be able to leverage Roche's global infrastructure of 130 affiliate entities. It will also benefit from the pharma's medical education team in the US through Roche's subsidiary Genentech located in S. San Francisco, California. Roche's pledge to use Foundation Medicine's platform for its clinical trials will also ensure a revenue stream for the biotech. For Roche, the deal will allow access to Foundation Medicine's knowledge base, accrued through analyzing tumor samples in its commercial testing business.
