Research on mitochondria will benefit from a new compendium of genetic and physiological data.

Besides providing energy, mitochondria regulate cellular metabolism and signaling, with critical roles in cell growth, division, differentiation and death. Indeed, mitochondrial dysfunction underlies many diseases and may contribute to aging. In this issue, Wagner et al.1 combine gene expression analysis, chemical genomics and assays of mitochondrial oxidative energy metabolism to generate snapshots of the bioenergetic state of cells after various chemical perturbations. Three vignettes illustrate the potential of their approach to provide insights into mitochondrial biology and drug toxicity and to suggest leads for new therapeutics.
