Investor activism hits the biotech industry with mixed results. Karl Thiel investigates.

Many institutional investors seek to have their voices heard by corporate leadership. At times, some will use their influence or voting power to a pressure change of management, policy, strategy or more. But although many investors might turn to activism in a specific situation, investors like Icahn and Loeb are better known for seeking out companies at which they believe such changes will unlock unrealized value, then applying pressure to make them happen. That pressure is forcing unprecedented changes in an industry that has long resisted widespread consolidation. Is biotech ripe for further pickings by shareholder activists, or has this trend almost run its course?
