Marketplace response to GM animal products

AquaBounty's transgenic salmon, designated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as safe to eat, is the first genetically modified (GM) animal approved for human consumption. We have tested consumer willingness to purchase this product, with and without a defined consumer benefit, in a real market setting in Norway—a country known to be very resistant to GM food. We find near-universal consumer aversion to the GM animal concept, but a strong ameliorating effect of an added consumer benefit.
