Next month, the US National Academy of Sciences (Washington, DC, USA) will convene meetings with the aim of providing recommendations for researchers, policymakers and regulatory agencies on when, if ever, germline engineering of human embryos might be permissible. Earlier this year, David Baltimore and Paul Berg and a small group of other interested stakeholders met in Napa, California, to debate the risks and benefits of germline modification, concluding “at present, the potential safety and efficacy issues arising from the use of this technology must be thoroughly investigated and understood before any attempts at human engineering are sanctioned, if ever, for clinical testing”1.
