  1. Tide data were provided courtesy of One Tree Research Station. Low tide represents the time at which pumping onto the reef started; sampling occurred 60 min afterward. There was no significant difference between mean PAR (mean ± s.e.m.) for treatment (902 ± 115 μmol m−2 s−1) and control days (1,112 ± 175 μmol m−2 s−1) days (unpaired t-tests).
