Differences in mat-forming ability of putative ecotypes B4 and B1 within community B. Putative ecotype B4 (LT, morphotype 4) formed a dense mat on the surface of the medium, while putative ecotype B1 grew in the broth phase, suggesting niche partitioning on the basis of microhabitat specialization.
