Spinoffs must have been established in the past five years and must be commercialising research in the life or physical sciences. Applications are sought from companies seeking to translate new, breakthrough science into commercial applications using highly innovative approaches.

The winner prize package includes*:

• A cash prize of €30,000

• The right to use The Spinoff Prize 2023 winner branding online and in pitch materials

Longlisted (‘ones to watch’) and shortlisted spinoffs will be featured in a special report published in Nature. Shortlisted companies will be invited to pitch at a virtual slam event, from which four finalists will be chosen to pitch live at the 2023 Future Insight™ Days. The winner will be announced during this conference.

2020 winner

The inaugural Spinoff Prize was awarded to Sibel Health, a spin-off from Northwestern University. Sibel Health has developed flexible, low-cost wireless sensors that monitor infants’ and premature babies’ heart rates and blood pressure, without scarring their fragile skin.

2021 winner

The winner of the second Spinoff Prize was High-T Tech. Founded in 2019 by the University of Maryland and John Hopkins University, HighT-Tech provides disruptive materials science-based technologies derived from the novel shock synthesis method and ultrafast high-temperature sintering technique.
