Future Science Prize 2022

The Future Science Prize is the first privately funded science prize jointly established by scientists and entrepreneurs. It was established in 2016 by the Future Forum, a non-profit organization based in mainland China. The prize has three award categories: life science, physical science, and mathematics/computer science.

The prize aims to recognize scientific breakthroughs that have long-term significance. Regardless of the researcher’s nationality, the nominated work should have been completed primarily in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan. Each prize carries a monetary award of ¥6.5 million (approximately USD$1 million). Learn more about the 2022 winners in the videos below and find the winners from other years here.

Future Science Prize 2022 – The Life Science Prize Laureate

Dr Wenhui Li, winner of the 2022 Life Science Prize.

The laureate was awarded the prize for his discovery of the hepatitis B and D virus receptor, sodium taurocholate co-transporting polypeptide (NTCP). This discovery has facilitated the development of more effective treatment for hepatitis B and D.

Future Science Prize 2022 – The Mathematics and Computer Science Prize Laureate

Professor Ngaiming Mok, winner of the 2022 Mathematics and Computer Science Prize.

The laureate was awarded the prize for developing the theory of varieties of minimal rational tangents in algebraic geometry and proving Ax-Schanuel’s conjecture for Shimura varieties.

Future Science Prize 2022 – The Physical Science Prize Laureate

Professor Xueming Yang, winner of the 2022 Physical Science Prize.

The laureate was awarded the prize for developing new-generation molecular beam techniques with high resolution and sensitivity for state-resolved reaction dynamics studies, which have been used to reveal quantum resonances and geometric phase effects in chemical reactions.
