The Future Science Prize is the first privately funded science prize jointly established by scientists and entrepreneurs. It was established in 2016 by the Future Forum, a non-profit organization based in mainland China. The prize has three award categories: life science, physical science, and mathematics/computer science.
The prize aims to recognize scientific breakthroughs that have long-term significance. Regardless of the researcher’s nationality, the nominated work should have been completed primarily in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan.
Each prize carries a monetary award of ¥6.5 million (approximately USD$1 million).
The decision-making process resembles those of the Nobel and Turing Prizes - nomination is by invitation only, and the review and final decision making is done by a scientific committee composed of distinguished scientists. Personal or institutional nominations are not accepted. For each candidate, the Scientific Committee will conduct an international review to assess the originality and the impact of the work. The winners are selected via anonymous vote by the entire Scientific Committee. To ensure fairness, the selection process is documented and monitored by a regulatory committee.
Through awarding those who have made great contributions to our society, we wish to make the awardees role models for young people, to spread the spirit of science, to encourage the pursuit of scientific careers and, ultimately, to make the world a better place.
