Founded in 1921 as Jiangxi Public Medical School, Nanchang University (NCU) is located in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. The main campus covers an area of 4,321 acres. NCU is a comprehensive university with strength in the arts, science, technology, and medicine. Recognized as one of the national ‘double first-class’ universities, established by the Ministry of Education and Jiangxi Province, Nanchang University’s reputation has developed in leaps and bounds.
Spearheading talent development
NCU’s 4,300-plus faculty members include 78 recipients of national-level talent programmes, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and four dual-employed members of the Academy. There are 34,000 full-time undergraduate students, 15,000 postgraduate students, and more than 1,200 overseas students. The university has won 10 national teaching achievement awards and 4 gold, 10 silver, and 16 bronze medals in the China International College Students’ ‘Internet+’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Since its establishment, the university has trained more than 400,000 outstanding alumni, contributing to national and local socio-economic development.
Promoting the high-quality development of disciplines
NCU is keen to promote cross-disciplinary diversity, and is currently offering three national key disciplines including Food Science and Engineering, in addition to 96 undergraduate programmes in 12 subject categories. As well as 11 postdoctoral scientific research stations, it offers 15 and 47 first-level discipline authorization points respectively for doctorate and graduate degrees. NCU is renowned for its joint undergraduate programme in biomedical Sciences with the Queen Mary University of London.
NCU’s research is internationally and domestically competitive as reflected by the 2021 US News & World Report Best Global University Ranking, placing NCU’s Agricultural Sciences 19th in the world. In 2020, eight disciplines including Chemistry and Clinical Medicine entered the top 1% of the ESI world rankings, and Agricultural Sciences (food discipline) in the top 1.15 per thousand.
Inspiring innovations for real-world benefits
The school has 4 national innovation platforms and 92 provincial and ministerial science and technology platforms. In recent years, the school’s innovation ability has been continuously enhanced, and a number of original and landmark scientific research results have been achieved. The High-efficiency GaN-based Blue Light Emitting Diode on Silicon Substrate project by Professor Fengyi Jiang of the School of Materials Science and Engineering won the first prize of the 2015 State Technological Invention Award, and Professor Mingyong Xie’s team from Food Science and Engineering won the second prize of the 2016 State Scientific and Technological Progress Award. The school’s breakthrough research papers have been published many times in top journals such as Science, Nature, and Cell.
Giving back to the community
NCU is committed to serving society and was selected as one of the first batch of higher education bases assigned by the Ministry of Education to promote translational research for scientific and technological achievements. It has also been rated as an excellent national technology business incubator by the Torch Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology for six consecutive years. A large number of achievements such as high-efficiency silicon-based LED lighting technology, and fruit and vegetable probiotic fermentation technology have been widely used, resulting in positive economic and social benefits.
