New horizons for a historic research giant

Credit: Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital is named after the founding father of modern China, Sun Yat-sen, who once studied here.

Also known as the Second Affiliated Hospital of SYSU, the 184-year institution has developed into a top ranking general hospital, integrating medical treatment, teaching, research, disease prevention, and healthcare, and is designated as a high-quality hospital of Guangdong province. Rapid expansion has led to several campuses in the city and the Pearl River Delta region.

Integral to SYSU’s clinical medicine programme, which is ranked among the global top 1% in Essential Science Indicators (ESI) subject area ranking, the hospital plays a key role in the programme’s selection for the national ‘double first-class’ initiative. With 32 key clinical specialties, the hospital focuses on six academic clusters, including malignant tumours, cardiovascular systems, immunology and metabolism, gynaecology and paediatrics, chiropractic rehabilitation, and head and neck diseases. It also boasts 18 key laboratories and research centres, specializing in immune microenvironments, RNA-related biomedicine and the integration of medicine and engineering. Leveraging existing public experiment platforms, a biobank, and a severe disease laboratory, the hospital is enhancing its research infrastructure and expanding to 40,000m2 of laboratory space equipped with cutting-edge instruments.

Its strong footing in research is underpinned by a large pool of talented scholars, including many receiving funding on national talent plans, such as the Chang Jiang Scholars and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Its renowned researchers have obtained major grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the 973 Project, the 863 Project, and other national key research projects. Their research results are published in high-quality journals, with 20 papers in journals with a 10-plus impact factor in 2018, including two in Cell. Studies on non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression, and on new anti-tumour strategies targeting the immune microenvironment have been listed among the top 10 scientific advances of Chinese universities respectively in 2008 and 2018.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital is seeking talented researchers from around the world to join it in enhancing research capacities of the hospital, while advancing medical research and improving health for all.
