Carbon pricing reduces emissions

A meta-analysis of 21 carbon-pricing schemes suggests that the strategy reduces greenhouse-gas emissions. Deciding how high to set prices is the next step — and one that might benefit from the insights of less-aggregated studies in various sectors.

Driven by increasing concerns about Earth’s changing climate, governments around the world have started to implement carbon-pricing schemes — but the effectiveness of these policies remains contested. Are they capable of reducing emissions enough to meet ambitious climate goals? Writing in Nature Communications, Döbbeling-Hildebrandt et al.1 have evaluated the impact of carbon pricing on reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and found that the approach is broadly effective, if nuanced.
