This spacecraft just smashed into an asteroid in an attempt to change its path

NASA’s DART mission is testing whether humanity could deflect a space rock if it were going to hit Earth.

Update: The DART spacecraft hit the asteroid Dimorphos as planned on 26 September. Some of the final images it captured before impact were added above and below. Nature will cover the mission’s outcome as new data arrive in the coming days.
