The ancient art of origami is finding new use as a modern design tool. Researchers at Harvard have created enclosed origami shapes that can be inflated and are stable in their expanded state. This gives the researchers the ability to create flat-pack structures which can be inflated into a usable position but which won’t collapse if punctured. These kinds of designs could be useful for temporary shelters and living spaces, for architecture and potentially even for sending into space.
