For 150,000 years the Neanderthals thrived in Europe. Then, their territory grew smaller and by 35,000 years ago they had disappeared from the continent completely. In this Nature Video we re-play the Neanderthal survival game, with help from Tom Higham and team from the University of Oxford. As Neanderthal territory shrinks, see how new players with more sophisticated tools enter the game – and how our species eventually wins.
