Giuliana Huerta-Mercado feels that she had a good school education in Lima, Peru. But shortly after arriving at the University of Michigan as a first-year economics student in 2015, she was startled by what she saw. Some of her US friends were already working on projects that involved robots or drones. “I was like, how do you know all these things? You haven’t even started doing engineering,” she says.
