Liver fibrosis, characterized by excessive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, represents the final process common to most chronic liver diseases. Activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are the principal cellular players that promote synthesis and deposition of ECM components. However, the development of agents targeting pathways driving HSC activation, such as the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) pathway, have been limited by side-effects.
