Mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced mitophagy are strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of dopaminergic neurodegeneration in both sporadic and familial Parkinson disease (PD). Restoring mitophagy to accelerate the removal of damaged mitochondria is therefore an appealing disease-modifying therapeutic strategy.
