Recently, JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) published the results of the Australasian Collaborative Trial of Magnesium Sulphate (ACTOMgSO4), a difficult-to-conduct, and important, study recently completed by Dr. Caroline Crowther et al.1 As this randomized controlled trial, through no fault of the investigators, has generated so much misunderstanding in regard to what may constitute any proper use of magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) in the United States in the setting of preterm labor, my colleagues and I want to explore these matters in greater depth with the members of the American neonatal and perinatal medical community through the use of an attributable risk model.
