The prevalence of glaucoma around the world is expected to increase in step with the ageing of population. This escalation will likely result in a greater social and economic impact of this blinding disease. To counteract this trend, it is essential that clinicians be given the tools to improve the diagnosis and management of glaucoma in order to detect early disease and decrease the rate of progression.

New Avenues towards Glaucoma Management is the title of a conference held in the Centre for Theoretical Medicine Research of the University of Dresden, Germany. It focused on recent advances in basic and clinical research in glaucoma, presented and discussed by a group of distinguished experts in the field. The scientific information contained in these proceedings should be of value to all clinicians who take care of patients with glaucoma.
