When drugs development meets genomics

On average it takes 15 years and US$500 million dollars to discover and develop a new therapeutic drug. (http: //www.lilly.com/about/overview/high-lights.html). Since the failure rate is high, it has been estimated that about 60 new targets and 20 drug candidates should enter discovery and clinical trials respectively every year, in order to maintain three novel drugs being produced annually.1 Recent completion of the human and other genome projects and advances in functional genomics techniques carry great promises in speeding up drug development process.2,3,4,5 The recent HTT expo conferenceFootnote 1 facilitated the interaction between drug developers and genomics researchers and addressed how to effectively utilize genomics in drug development.
