Cochrane Review Protocols 2013–4

Abstract

Commentaries on Cochrane reviews form a core part of the content of the Evidence-based Dentistry Journal. Protocols for Cochrane review are published on the Cochrane library (www.thecochranelibrary.com) after peer review, and occasionally reviews are published a short time later but more often it takes more than a year for the final review to appear. In this new section of the journal we are planning to list the protocols from the Cochrane Oral Health Group (http://ohg.cochrane.org/) and dentally relevant protocols from other Cochrane Groups on an annual basis.

The objective of this review is to assess the beneficial and adverse effects of home-use whitening toothpastes with an abrasive or chemical action or both, in the prevention and removal of extrinsic dental stains in adults.

The objectives of this review are to determine the clinical effectiveness and safety of interventions in the pain, episode duration and episode frequency of oral ulcers and any change in the quality of life for patients with aphthous-type ulceration associated with Behçet's disease.

The aim of this review is to assess the effect of non-surgical adjunctive interventions for accelerating tooth movement on the rate of tooth movement and duration of orthodontic treatment.

This review is being undertaken in collaboration with the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination of the University of York, UK, as an update for their review published in 2000. The objectives are as follows:

• 1 To evaluate the effects of water fluoridation (artificial or natural) for the prevention of dental caries.

• 2 To evaluate the effects of water fluoridation (artificial or natural) on dental fluorosis.

The aim of this review is to assess the effects of different xylitol-containing products on preventing dental caries in children and adolescents. The review is particularly concerned with xylitol-containing gels, toothpastes, varnishes, mouthrinses, chewing gums and sprays.
