Abstract
Last year I spent my elective in Papua New Guinea. I surveyed the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease among the Papua New Guineans and found that rates of disease were higher than those found in earlier studies. Changing diet, poor oral hygiene and a chronic shortage of trained dental staff are the main culprits
