The authors used a symmetrical array of four hydrophones, submerged in the sea, to record the sounds emitted by several species of dolphin, including white-beaked dolphins, Hawaiian spinner dolphins (pictured) and killer whales. The shape of the array was designed to ensure that the sounds it received were as close as possible in amplitude to the sounds at the centre (rather than the edges) of the beam of sonar 'clicks' emitted by the animals. The approach also allowed the authors to determine the distance of the animals from the array.
