Abstract
A combined oxygen isotope, planktonic foraminiferal and pollen record from the southwestern Indian Ocean makes possible a comparison between estimated lowland terrestrial temperatures and isotope and faunal sea surface temperatures. The estimates of land and sea mean temperatures over the past 135 kyr are consistent to within 0.5 °C, and in all three records the maximum temperature changes between glacial and interglacial times are about 3–4 °C.
