Post-perihelion imaging of comet Halley at ESO

Naturevolume 321pages363365 (1986) | Download Citation

The near-nucleus and large-scale activity of comet Halley has been monitored at the ESO La Silla Observatory since mid-February 1986. During an 8-week period with excellent observing conditions, images obtained with three telescopes documented the post-perihelion behaviour on a daily basis. We describe the instruments and procedures and provisionally summarize the major structures and events that were seen at the time of closest approach of the various spacecraft, between 5 March and 14 March 1986.
