Birth of the maser and laser

Abstract

Shortly before his death in January 1984, Professor Alfred Kastler, winner of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1966 for his work on optical pumping, submitted to Nature a book review of Masers and Lasers by Mario Bertolotti1. Published here is an edited and abridged version of the review.
