Abstract
Five crucial tests of the ‘long’ and ‘short’ extragalactic distance scales based on a new approach using our Galaxy as the fundamental calibrator are presented. All confirm the short scale within 0.1–0.2 mag and the corresponding value of the Hubble constant H0 = 95±10 km s−1 Mpc−1. All reject the long scale (H′0 = 50 km s−1 Mpc) at very high significance levels.
