Bunching of 8–10 keV auroral electrons near an artificial electron beam

Abstract

High frequency modulations (1 MHz) of energetic (keV) electrons in the auroral ionosphere have been detected unambiguously for the first time using a novel technique. These modulations were induced by an artificially injected pulsed electron beam (8 keV, 4% duty cycle), and were accompanied by electrostatic wave emissions at the same frequency.
