A survey of ozone levels in the British Isles using indicator plants

Abstract

THE occurrence of elevated levels of photochemically-produced ozone in the British Isles has been reported by several workers1–4. Such elevated concentrations are not restricted to urban areas, but can occur far from sources of pollution1,3,5,6. Most of the measurements of ozone have been made in Southeast England; there has been no systematic attempt to study its distribution over the whole country. We report here results of a nationwide survey of ozone concentrations, using the appearance of visible injury on the leaves of a sensitive plant species as an indicator of the presence of the pollutant.
