Recurrent activity in galactic nuclei

Abstract

Arguments are presented to support the hypothesis that massive galaxies periodically undergo phases of nuclear activity during their evolution at intervals 108–109 yr. The importance of recurrence to theories of active nuclei is emphasised. In particular, the evidence does not favour the production of massive black holes in galactic nuclei.
