Abstract
IN the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae a number of mutants potentially defective in DNA replication have been isolated1–3. However, the only defective gene product so far identified in any of these mutants is that in cdc21 which is defective in thymidylate synthetase4,5. We report here that cdc9–l, isolated by Hartwell as a conditional cell cycle mutant6, is defective in a DNA ligase involved in both replication and repair of DNA. A mutant with similar properties has recently been described in Schizosaccharomyces pombe7.
