Direct biochemical demonstration of two types of α-adrenoreceptor in rat brain

Abstract

IN the peripheral sympathetic nervous system the transmission of impulses from postganglionic sympathetic neurones to their effector cells is determined by receptors both on the effector cell (‘postsynaptic’) and on the postganglionic nerve endings (‘presynaptic’). The presynaptic receptors seem to be involved in the regulation of noradrenaline release during nerve stimulation1,2. The limited pharmacological data available suggest that in the central nervous system there is more than one class of α-adrenergic receptors and that they are involved in the regulation of central adrenergic transmission3. We describe here the direct biochemical identification of two classes of α adrenoreceptor in rat brain membranes.
