Galaxy clustering spectrum and cosmic luminosity

Abstract

A PRELIMINARY correlation between richness class1 and total cluster luminosity can be obtained from the sample studied by Oemler2 (see also ref. 3), the two quantities being related by the equation:

log (richness)=1.21 + 1.13 log〈L/L×10−12)

where richness is given by the mean of the counts as defined for each richness class by Abell. We show here that the correlation is not a very strong one due to the dispersion intrinsic to each richness class and, above all, to the fact that there are no clusters of richness class 4 in Oemler's sample and only one cluster of richness class 5 has been found in the volume searched by Abell, about 109 Mpc3.
