Composition of acetylcholine receptor protein from skeletal muscle

Abstract

THE isolated acetylcholine-recognition unit of the receptor protein (AChR) is characterised by its specific binding of snake venom α-neurotoxins and of nicotinic cholinergic ligands1–4. AChR purified completely from mammalian denervated muscle consists, chiefly or entirely, of an oligomer of 41,000 molecular weight subunits. It is not clear whether this comprises the entire receptor system, or whether another component is involved5,6 in forming the ionic channel.
