FIVE years ago, Torun University moved to a new campus in the suburb of Bielany, which thus became Poland's only “university village”. In spite of this splendid new site, science at Torun, as elsewhere, is somewhat constrained by lack of finance. Nevertheless, some interesting research is going forward on a relatively shoestring budget—a tradition going back to the difficult days of the university's foundation in the aftermath of World War II.
