Abstract
EXPERIMENTAL allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) can readily be produced in several animal species by the injection of central nervous system (CNS) tissue or the basic protein of CNS myelin with or without adjuvants1. Although EAE is usually a nonrecurring and self-limiting process, recurrent EAE has been reported to occur spontaneously in rats2 and guinea pigs3 and also in specific conditions in the rat4. Investigations on rats have previously used female rats2,4. I report here a striking difference between male and female Lewis rats in the incidence of spontaneous recurrent EAE.
