Abstract

OBSERVATIONS of redshifts on samples complete to a given limiting magnitude have shown that redshifts are segregated or, in other words, that ranges of velocities exist in which for a given region of the sky no galaxies are observed1–9. Such observations could fit the empirical model briefly discussed by myself and Rood3. We suggested that visible matter in the Universe is found in groups and/or large asymmetric structures, superclusters. Empty, or nearly empty, regions are observed in between. Such an empirical model was confirmed by data obtained in the Hercules region. The model may agree with the theory and numerical analysis developed by Zeldovich and Coll10. This note stresses that the observations set a strong limit on the density of the so called ‘field galaxies’ and questions the very existence of such objects.
