Abstract
BY applying the following working definition for X-ray bursts1—rise times of less than a few seconds, durations of seconds to minutes, and recurrence in some ‘regular’ pattern—18 burst sources have been observed to date (refs 2–16) of which one (observed by SAS-3) has not yet been reported. Their positions are shown in Fig. 1. If single ‘burst’ events which meet the criteria of rise time and duration but not recurrence are accepted, seven burst sources can be added16–19, of which two (observed by OSO-8) have not yet been reported. These seven are also indicated in Fig. 1.
